Bangladesh, Sept. 19 – The Canada-based Islamic Circle of North America distributed food among hundreds of Muslim Rohingya arriving at the Balukhali refugee camp near Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday, September 19.

The organization said 1,000 food packages were handed out. According to reports, roughly half of the more than 400,000 Rohingya in Bangladesh who had fled violence in Myanmar were living in makeshift encampments without adequate shelter, supplies or facilities. A woman and three children were reportedly killed by a stampede at Balukhali camp on September 15, as refugees rushed to receive aid handouts.

Torrential rains were also said to be causing flooding at refugee camps, adding to already difficult conditions. The United Nations on September 19 said it was scaling up its assistance for Rohingya refugees. Addressing the UN General Assembly that day, Secretary-General António Guterres condemned what he described as “a vicious cycle of persecution, discrimination, radicalization and violent repression,” and urged the Myanmar government to end military operations in Rahkine state and allow unhindered humanitarian access.
