-—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—-
(NEW YORK, NY, April 29, 2014) – The Islamic Circle of North America pays tribute to the victims of chemical warfare on the International Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare.
God states in the Quran, “whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.” [5:32]
This United Nation’s observance aims to honor the memory of those who have suffered and to reaffirm a commitment to working toward the elimination of chemical weapons.
Although the majority of the world has gotten rid of its stockpile, there are several nations that have yet to do so, including Israel, North Korea, and Myanmar.
“Chemical weapons have killed and disfigured millions,” says Naeem Baig, president of ICNA. “They need to be completely wiped out to promote peace and security.”
One the eve of an expedition to Syria, the first Caliph, Abu Bakr, radi Allahu ‘anhu, may God be pleased with him, instructed his army to not commit treachery, to not mutilate dead bodies and to not kill a child, or a woman, or an aged man. He said “bring no harm to the trees, nor burn them with fire, especially those which are fruitful. Slay not any of the enemy’s flock. save for your food.”
Chemical weapons and warfare horrifically maims the victims and indiscriminately kills innocent civilians. The international community must endeavor to dispose of all chemical weapons and push governments to cease chemical warfare.
