The Oklahoma City affiliate of the Islamic Circle of North America Relief held several back-to-school giveaway events for the first time on Aug. 6 and 7.
Dr. Bilal Piracha, an Edmond physician and president of ICNA-Oklahoma City, said volunteers from the Muslim community, including many from Mercy School, stuffed backpacks with school supplies such as pencils, crayons, pens, scissors and notebook paper.
Piracha said 200 backpacks were distributed free to the community at three “Back-2-School Giveaway” events. Crowds gathered at the events at Masjid Al-Mu’Min, 1322 NE 23, and ICNA-Oklahoma City’s new Shifa Clinic at 3840 St. Clair Ave., while the giveaway at Mercy School, 14001 N Harvey, drew a smaller number.
Piracha said an additional 200 backpacks will be distributed to people who contacted the organization after the giveaway events. Remaining backpacks will be distributed at the Shifa Clinic, he said.
