(HOUSTON, TX, May 27, 2018) ICNA President Javaid Siddiqi was the Honorary Chair who welcomed the guests at the annual Houston Iftar Ramadan dinner at Bayou City Event Center last Sunday.

The Annual Iftar Ramadan Dinner, which has become a tradition in the metropolis for nearly two decades was attended by over 1,600 guests that included members of local, state and federal elected officials as well as diplomats from several countries. Also in attendance were a large representation of the Muslim community leadership along with many Jewish and Christian leadership.
Javaid Siddiqi said “it’s a great example of the inclusive policies of the city of Houston and its leadership. The city of Houston is among the top diverse cities in America.”

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner was the keynote speaker who expressed support to Muslims and was very appreciative of the work of ICNA and ICNA relief especially during Harvey.

He urged for fool proof arrangements to protect schools from gun violence. “As we care about protecting travelers and visitors to federal, state and locally owned buildings, we must also show the same sense of urgency, concern, and compassion toward children and adults in schools,” he said, and added that Houston is a big diverse family and the Muslim community is an important part of that diversity.”

Congresswoman Shiela Jackson (TX-18) and Congressman Al Green (TX-9) both spoke strongly in support of the Muslim community and about the positive role it has played in America. Texas Governor, Greg Abbott sent a pre-recorded message honoring the event.
The event was organized by Abu Dhabi, Baku, Basrah, Istanbul and Karachi Sister City Association along with The Islamic Society of Greater Houston. Officials of Mayor Office of Trade and International Affairs also coordinated the program. ICNA and HHRD are also the collaborating organizations for the event along with many others.
The event is meant to showcase peace, diversity and unity.
