Come meet some of the members of Jewish Voice for Peace’s National Rabbinical Council, and learn about the work that they are doing to inside and outside the mainstream Jewish community to combat censorship; oppose Faithwashing (using “interfaith” unity as a way of censoring criticism of Israel); and creating new spaces within the Jewish community where non-Zionism is welcomed.
Rabbi Joseph Berman (D.C): The Government Affairs Liaison for JVP, Joseph has organized for justice and equality for Palestinians and Israelis for over a decade. Ordained at the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in Boston, Rabbi Berman draws upon years of experience in advocacy and faith-based community organizing.
Rabbi Michael Davis (of Evanston): Rabbi Michael Davis was a national clergy organizer for the four-year-long Hyatt worker campaign that resulted successfully in a fair labor contract. He has spoken out against Islamophobia and represented the Jewish community at MAS-ICNA’s recent convention at McCormick place. Rabbi Davis initiated an open letter of rabbis against war with Iran. Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa praised his work on this matter. Rabbi Davis has served the Chicago community as clergy for over 20 years. He was a founding member of the Rabbinical Council of Jewish Voice for Peace and has been active in many peace and justice campaigns.
Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb: One of the first 10 women to become a rabbi, she is a storyteller, ceremonial and visual artist, peace educator and author. She served as a congregational rabbi for 4 decades and was a member of Breira and New Jewish Agenda. Lynn co-founded Interfaith Peace Builders with Doug Hostetter (1998), and has lead many delegations to Iran, Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. Co-founder of The Muslim-Jewish Peace walk with Abdur Rauf Campos Marquetti (2002), and Community of Living Traditions in 2010, Lynn has created many programs and campaigns that lift up multi-faith work grounded in social justice. Lynn co-founded Shomeret Shalom Rabbinic School & Global Congregation in April 2015, and currently serves on the board of Interfaith Movement 4 Human Integrity and the Rabbinic Council of Jewish Voice for Peace. Rabbi Brant Rosen (of Evanston): Rabbi Brant Rosen is Midwest Regional Director of the American Friends Service Committee, and formerly the rabbi of Jewish Re-constructionist Congregation in Evanston. He is the co-founder and co-chairperson of the Jewish Voice for Peace Rabbinical Council and a former president of the Re-constructionist Rabbinical Association. In 2009, he co-founded the Jewish Fast for Gaza with Rabbi Brian Walt. Rabbi Rosen is author of Wrestling in the Daylight: A Rabbi’s Path to Palestinian Solidarity (Just World Books, 2012). Rabbi Alissa Wise (coming in from Philly): Alissa was the founding co-chair of the JVP Rabbinical Council and the co-founder of the Nakba Education Project (NEP), which offers educational resources to an American audience about the history of the Nakba and its implications in Palestine/Israel today. She is a Deputy Director of Jewish Voice for Peace.
