The ICNA mosque is set to open in April. The ICNA Islamic Center will be located on Woodlawn Trail near Route 1, Alexandria, Virginia.
Construction at a new Route 1 mosque is on schedule to be completed and open by spring, a facility spokesman said.
The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) is building the mosque at 2913 Woodlawn Trail, near the intersection with Route 1. Mohammad Khan, the mosque’s managing director, said the facility would be called the ICNA Islamic Center.
“We are hoping we’ll finish by the end of March, weather permitting,” Khan said.
The mosque would open to local families in April, he said.
The facility is costing approximately $850,000 to build, said Khan, who added that the mosque would serve about 50 families, or 150 people. The building sits back from the road and is surrounded by a low security wall.
The ICNA formerly held Friday prayers at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, which had sparked national media attention and angry emails and phone calls to Aldersgate pastors. In August of last year the group moved the services to Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Mount Vernon.
