The Islamic Circle of North America wishes you and your loved ones a blessed Eid Al-Adha!
In lieu of making a moon sighting decision to mark the beginning of this month, ICNA invites you to build a sense of unity amongst the Muslim community and celebrate Eid Al-Adha with your local Islamic centers and masaajid. As per the Saudi Central Hajj Committee, this year Hajj will be on Thursday, November 26.
We also encourage you to take advantage of these first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, of which the Messenger of Allah (S) said:
“There are no days more loved to Allah for you to worship Him therein than the ten days of Dhul Hijjah. Fasting any day during it is equivalent to fasting one year and to offer Salatul Tahajjud [late-night prayer] during one of its nights is like performing the late night prayer on the Night of Power.” (Tirmidhi)
May Allah (SWT) accept our efforts in His way and allow us to reap the benefits of the ten days of Dhul Hijjah. May He (SWT) accept the Hajj of those brothers and sisters fortunate enough to embark on this unforgettable journey and allow us all to visit His beloved house in the years to come. Ameen. Eid Al-Adha Kareem!
ICNA Wishes You a Blessed Eid Al-Adha

Assalamu Alaikum WRBR,
I disagree with the ICNA’s comment to go with the local community or masjeed for unity–> which is a wrong word and wrong decision as because if local community or masjeed takes a wrong decision.
ONE POINT MUST NEED TO BE CLEARED THAT EID-UL AZHA IS ON 10TH DAY OF THE MONTH JEEL HAJJ. SO IF THE WHOLE UNITY GOES FOR OTHER DAY “THIS UNITY IS BASELESS MAY BE MAJORITY THERE” THE BOTTOMLINE IS THAT UNITY BASED ON WRONG DECISION IS ASTRAY –> END UP INTO HELLFIRE.
On this liue I think and hope ICNA was in always in correct way but this time not mentioning the date is heartbreaking.YOU MUST SPEAK THE CORRECT IN BOLD ATTITUDE.
I need to know the decision of ICNA observing the EID-UL AZHA.
I shall be highly pleased if ICNA declares the date they belief.
THANKS AND JAZAKALLAH WA KHAIRUN; and
WASSALAM.
Dr. Aboo Mannan
Eid Mubarak, and may it easy for those who will be performing Hajj.
Here in Richmond, Va we are doing Eid on November 28, 2009. Those of you doing Eid on this or different date, I greet you with Eid Mubarak. May Allah accept all our worship.
I agree with Dr. Aboo Mannan. Please post your decision regrading Eid Ul Azha.
I agree with Aboo Mannan,ICNA is a national orgnization. The leadership need to take a stand one way or the other on the moon issue. There are a lot of Masajid in North America, who wants to start fasting or do Eids with moonsighting.ICNA needs to stand with them.May Allah guide us all in the right path.Ameen
hajj is actually on thusday november 26
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuhu.
JazakAllah wa Khairun.
EID MUBARAK TO ALL WHATEVER DECISION IT IS. MAY ALLAH (SWT) GUIDE US ALL.
Thanks for the opinion posted. My point is that “UNITY IN ISLAM IS A MUST AND NEEDS CORRECT DECISIONS AND GUIDANCES, IN REGARDS, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE AND REMIND OURSELVES IS THAT THE HADITH–> ‘THERE WILL BE 73 SECTS OUT OF WHICH ONE SECT IS FOR JANNAT ….. IN OTHER WORDS REST 72 SECTS, MAJORITY, ARE DESTINED TO HELLFIRE (THOSE WHO ALSO OBSERVE ANYWAY APPARENTLY ALL ISLAMIC RITUALS)’
SO WE ALL NEEDS EDUCATION AND BY THAT TO RECTIFY OURSELVES.
I know it is a delicate and controvertial issue with different opinion and motive. But we need to know the correct one with authentic correct referances.
I DID NOT MEAN TO HURT ANYBODY BUT TO BE IN JANNAT ALL TOGETHER WITH ALLAH (SWT)’s MERCY.AMEN.
I absolutely agree with Dr. Mannan. ICNA must declare according to its belief of following moon shighting when the Eid should be celebrated in USA/Canada. I’m beginning to see for the last 2 hilal sightings, some organizations following the moon sightenings in Trunidad and Guyana. Is this acceptable? By ICNA taking a position will help us to insure that the local Maasajid follow this and we have a leg to stand on and present our case. Without this, just like Br Uzma said, we will not be able to convince the local leadership and loose the cause.
I respect the feelings of Br. Aboo Mannan. But my question is : isn’t this kind of ‘bold attitude’ kept us divided so far? Should’nt we look for a common ground where we could be together again?
Yes definitely we need to have a common ground but based on what? Absolutely “Quran” and “Sunnah” right? Now the interpretations and opinions made us divided, so we need to correct that one first by clear knowledge “THERE COMES THE IQRA”. Please try to understand “WE HAVE A PRESCRIBED RULES” which is fixed “WE CAN NOT ALTER THAT”.
Now great question is “SHOULD WE FOLLOW SAUDI OR SHOULD WE FOLLOW MOON?”. So our common ground is absolutely one “QURAN AND AIDED BY SUNNAH”, which we need to know much clearly. THIS IS THE DUTY OF US EVERYBODY NOT FOR ANY PARTICULAR ORGINIZATION, GROUP, CLASS OR INDIVIDUAL.
LET US TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT QURAN AND SUNNAH STATES AND HOW OUR ARABIC MONTHS ARE BEGINNIG IN DIFFERENT PLACES? …
WASSALAM
May Almighty Allah guide us and keep us united on Quran and Sunnah, Ameen .In Fiqha it is clearly said that horizon of Hijaz (i.e Saudi Arab ), Faris (i.e Iran )and Hind
(i.e Indian sub-continent)are different than others in determining Hilal sighting .I wish if ICNA can announce ,just for the sake of Allah that Eid ul Adha is on Nov 28, 2009.
Jazak Allah.
Assalam Alaikum,
I do agree that the common ground for unity is ONLY the Quran and Sunnah. People look for their scholars to find common ground while the Quran says “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided.” (Ale Imran 103). For moon sighting the Quran says “They ask you, (O Mohammad SAW) about the new moons. Say, They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj (Al-Baqarah 189). If we follow these verses, we will NEVER be wrong. Unfortunately, we follow our scholars, Saudis (who have a long and sustained history of wrong decisions regarding sighting of the moon).
ICNA used to follow the Quran and Sunnah but they have abandoned them too and now following what the Quran says “And most of them follow not except assumptions. Indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all. (Yunus 36).
It is worth mentioning that the Quran says Hilal or the Crescent not the new moon. New moon is not visible and the crescent is. According to the Quran we start the month when we see the moon and not assume its presence. Calculations help us with the moon cycle but Saudi decision neither goes with the Quran and Sunnah nor with the calculations. There was no chance of moon sighting which the Saudis called confirmed sighting. May Allah guide us to the right path, the path of His chosen people.
In our local mosque we will inshaAllah pray Eid ul Adha prayer on Saturday 11/28.
ASA,
ICNA has a wide array of membership. Members who live all over the country and are part of their local masajid. These members are free to study on their own and follow whatever madhab or opinion that is out there. ICNA itself is in no position to make decisions on behalf of individuals who are better suited to go with the overall decision of their community. Everyone should be involved in their local masjid where they can voice their concerns and make a difference on a more practical level since Eid is celebrated at the community level.
May ALLAH (SWT) guide us on right direction.
What is “MADHAB”?? What “Quran” or “Sunnah” says on “Madhab”?? and “Opinion”??
Wassalam.
there is no unity among the muslims. we need to communicate with each other. futhermore we need a scholarly opinion. this why you should go to the following website for info about hilal sighting. www hilalsighting.org
Assalam Alaikum,
Dear brother Azeem,
Your response is really confusing. I always thought we followed one madhab which the Quran says “Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam” (Ale Imran 19). For divisions of the religion in various madahib, the Quran says “and do not be of those who associate others with Allah. Of those who have divided their religion and become sects, every faction rejoicing in what it has” (Ar-Rum 31-32).
As far as opinions go, we follow only Prophet Mohammad’s (SAW) opinion in religious matters preserved in ahadith. He said in a hadith that I am leaving the Quran and Sunnah. As long as you follow them you will never go astray (paraphrased).
By the way, I remember ICNA’s position until last year which was according to the Quran and Sunnah. This year they abondoned it. Has the religion changed or ICNA has changed its religion?
Assalamu Alaikum,
Islam was completed on the LAST SERMON of our beloved prohet MUHAMMAD (SAW) on only Haj performed.
Now the question is “IS MADHAB STARTED BEFORE OR AFTER THAT GREAT HOLY SPEACH???”.
ANYTHING, ANYSYSTEM, ANY RITUAL IN ISLAM ADDED AFTER THAT, IS “BIDA”—> “INNOVATION”—> NOT ACCEPTABLE—> LEAD’S TO HELL FIRE.
Now about EID UL AZHA, “IT IS ONLY ON THE 10TH DAY OF THE MONTH OF ‘JEEL HAJJ’ EXTENDING ON 11TH & 12TH DAY’S OF THE SAME MONTH “BASED ON FIRST CRESCENT SIGHTING OF THE MONTH”. “OTHERWISE, AFTER 30DAYS COMPLETION OF THE MONTH OF ‘JEEL QADH’ IF NEW CRESCENT IS NOT SEEN”.
NOW IF SOMEWAY, SOMEONE OR SOME AUTHORITY DECLARES BASED ON ANY SOPHISTICATED CALCULATION OR THE FOLLOWING DAY OF “ARAFAT” —> THAT IS NOT “EID” BUT SOMETHING ELSE, SOME OTHER FUNCTION (CAN BE ON COMMUNITY LEVEL) NOT GLOBAL EID CELEBRATION. IN THIS REGARD IT NEEDS TO BE MENTIONED THAT “THE DAY OF ARAFAT IS ON 09TH DAY OF THE MONTH ‘JEEL HAJJ’ WITH THE SAME PROCEDURE”.
MAY ALLAH(SWT), GUIDE US ON ONLY THE PATH OF HIS MERCY. AMEEN.
