NEW YORK, NY (March 14, 2019) – The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) condemns the horrific terrorist attack a few hours ago at two Mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand causing the death of around 50 and wounding many more men, women and children.

According to media reports, at least two heavily armed gunmen clad in military-style gear opened fire for about 20 minutes at the two city mosques that had about 300 people in attendance for the Friday prayer services. Police has arrested four suspects.
ICNA offers prayers to the victims and their families during this difficult time. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden called “one of New Zealand’s darkest days.”
Media reports that the gunmen appeared to be white supremacists who were “avenging the invasion of Europe” by Muslims. This heinous massacre is a painful reminder of the extreme consequence of bigotry that is increasingly normalized in public discourses.
ICNA appeals to all in New Zealand and everywhere else to come together at this difficult time to stamp out the evil of Islamophobia and other hatred based on race and religion.
ICNA also urges the law enforcement to provide security to Muslim institutions and bring speedy justice to the victims.
