New York, NY (6/9/2026) – The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) today welcomed the bicameral letter signed by 119 Democratic Members of Congress, led by Rep. James E. Clyburn (SC), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (MD), and Reps. Andre Carson (IN), Rosa DeLauro (CT), Hank Johnson (GA), Ro Khanna (CA), and Jerry Nadler (NY), strongly opposing the anti-Muslim “Sharia-Free America Caucus.”
ICNA thanks these lawmakers for defending the U.S. Constitution, religious liberty, and equal rights of all Americans — including Muslim citizens who serve as doctors, teachers, first responders, military members, and community leaders.
The letter rightly criticizes bills like the Preserving a Sharia-Free America Act and similar measures as unnecessary and constitutionally flawed for targeting one faith. Sharia guides Muslims in personal faith matters without overriding U.S. law.
“We commend the 119 signatories for rejecting Islamophobia and upholding the First Amendment,” said ICNA President Saad Kazmi. “This letter affirms that bigotry has no place in Congress.”
ICNA urges other Members of Congress to not remain silent but join this important initiative in defending religious freedom for all. ICNA also calls on Congress to form a Religious Freedom Caucus to protect the religious liberties of all Americans against discriminatory legislation.
ICNA remains committed to partnering with lawmakers to safeguard civil rights and religious freedom.
