Rohingya Muslims are an ethnic minority indigenous to Arakan/Rakhine State in Burma/Myanmar. Currently, they are facing genocide after the Burmese military has revoked their citizenship and committed major human rights violations. The genocidal campaign by the Government of Burma has led to displacement of nearly 3 million Rohingya in several countries and in Arakan, Burma. There are over 1.2 million Rohingya refugees in camps in Bangladesh and over 200,000 in the internally displaced camps in Arakan, Burma, who are victims of crimes committed by the Burmese military. COVID-19 global pandemic is a major threat to the Rohingya refugees and the internally displaced persons (IDPs). The heavily overcrowded camps are potentially ticking COVID-19 time bombs.
Rohingyan American Scholar Dr. Wakar Uddin shares with us his take on the issue and what the international community should be doing to help the Rohingyans.
