UTICA — The Muslim Community Association of the Mohawk Valley and Islamic Circle of North America worked together to host a free book bag giveaway for local students Tuesday afternoon at Hanna Park in front of Utica City Hall.
Moviz Saiddiqi, an organizer from the event and a representative of ICNA, said more than 50,000 school supplies are distributed by the organization across the country each year.
“We decided it was very important because need has increased,” said Saiddiqi, referring to the amount of those affected by job layoffs and the country’s economy. “We want families to save some money for the future … morally we’re forced to do this.”
Around 500 supplies and backpacks were expected to be distributed.
In addition to book bags, the group also provided free school supplies for the upcoming school year as well as hand sanitizer, masks and wipes.
Brochures on COVID-19 safety and awareness also were distributed to families.
